How the Two Knights Trap works

The Two Knights Trap is a classic chess opening trap arising from the Two Knights Defence. In this line Black wins decisive material by move 13, punishing a natural-looking but losing idea from White.

The full sequence runs 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d4 exd4 5.Ng5 d5 6.exd5 Nxd5 7.O-O Be7 8.Nxf7 Kxf7 9.Qf3+ Ke6 10.Re1+ Ne5 11.Bf4 Bf6 12.Bxe5 Bxe5 13.Nd2. Each move looks reasonable, which is exactly why the trap is so effective over the board — White walks into it while trying to play "normal" developing moves.

Recognising this pattern early lets you either spring it as Black or calmly sidestep it when you are White.
