How the Bird's Opening: Back-Rank Mate works
The Bird's Opening: Back-Rank Mate is a classic chess opening trap arising from the Bird's opening. In this line Black delivers checkmate on move 6, punishing a natural-looking but losing idea from White.
The full sequence runs 1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 h5 3.g3 h4 4.Nxh4 e5 5.fxe5 Rxh4 6.gxh4 Qxh4#. Each move looks reasonable, which is exactly why the trap is so effective over the board — White walks into it while trying to play "normal" developing moves.
This pattern is well known from master and correspondence play (Kourtesis - Kotronias, Athens 1989). Recognising it early lets you either spring it as Black or sidestep it as White.
