How the Bird's Opening: Bxf7 Sacrifice & Mate works
The Bird's Opening: Bxf7 Sacrifice & Mate is a classic chess opening trap arising from the Bird's opening. In this line White delivers checkmate on move 8, punishing a natural-looking but losing idea from Black.
The full sequence runs 1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 Nc6 4.e3 d4 5.exd4 Nxd4 6.Bc4 Bg4 7.Ne5 Bxd1 8.Bxf7#. Each move looks reasonable, which is exactly why the trap is so effective over the board — Black walks into it while trying to play "normal" developing moves.
This pattern is well known from master and correspondence play (Wall - Velas, Internet 1997). Recognising it early lets you either spring it as White or sidestep it as Black.
