How the Reti Opening Trap works
The Reti Opening Trap is a classic chess opening trap arising from the Reti Opening. In this line Black wins decisive material by move 8, punishing a natural-looking but losing idea from White.
The full sequence runs 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4 3.b4 f6 4.e3 e5 5.exd4 e4 6.Qe2 Qe7 7.Ng1 Nc6 8.Bb2 Nxb4. Each move looks reasonable, which is exactly why the trap is so effective over the board — White walks into it while trying to play "normal" developing moves.
Recognising this pattern early lets you either spring it as Black or calmly sidestep it when you are White.
